Dr Conny Bailey – Culture Club: The Founders of Art Appreciation and the modern Art Market
6.30pm refreshments, 7pm start
English Country House art collections are renowned around the world for the importance and quality of their contents. Much of this is down to the early art collectors, who in the seventeenth century not only acquired the first high-value collections, but also set the standards in collection rhetoric, assessment practices and display techniques that remain pertinent today. In this lecture Dr. Conny Bailey will introduce the group of early collectors around Charles I who first defined the aesthetic practice of art collecting, and show how the eventual fate the king continues to shape the art market of today.
